Niger's joy of seeing the light |
Cataract operations were performed in Niger after Benin, Togo and Ghana. Totally 165 cataract victims were brought to the light, while 600 underwent eye examination and were given spectacles or medication depending on their problem. The Cataract Campaign of the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation is being carried out successfully in previously selected African countries. Niger was the fourth stop for cataract operations. Through operations performed in Niger after Benin, Togo and Ghana 165 people were brought out of darkness.
165 people underwent operation and 600 eye examination
Cataract operations were performed in the city of Tisava, 700 kilometers away from the Nigerien capital Niamey with a population of 130,000 people. Three female doctors and three nurses conducted eye examinations of 600 patients and singled out cataract victims in ten days.
People of Niger, the poorest African country with a population of 13 million people, were pleased that a Turkish medic group performed cataract operations in the country. Despite its large population, there are only 11 oculists in Niger. It was reported that preparations for more cataract operations were underway. Nigeriens thank Turkish people and IHH
Cataract operations that are planned to be performed in 10 African countries are continuing. Doctors and nurses also volunteer in the campaign beside financial contributions. Cataract operations were performed successfully in Niger with the voluntary help from doctors and nurses.
Locals and patients who underwent operation frequently expressed their happiness by raising their right fist, sign of happiness in the indigenous culture. Those people who saw the light after years thanked Turkish people and the IHH team for their medical help.
