African eyes entrusted to Turkey | African eyes entrusted to Turkey |
The IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation launched, with the cooperation of the Solidarity Foundation, a year-long campaign on April 1 to bring to the light the Africans who suffer from sight problems. The campaign aims at fixing sight problems of 100,000 Africans. The campaign is supported by the Turkish and Sudanese health ministries. Officials from the Sudanese Health Ministry stated they view the project very promising and added, “Eyes of Africa are entrusted to Turkey.” There are millions of people suffering from cataract-related sight problems worldwide. It is estimated that the number of cataract victims in Africa is about five million. Cataract, which is widespread across Africa, is seen in almost all age groups; in youngsters, women and the old but especially in children. Poor Africans cannot afford expenses of cataract operation. Turkey has recently stepped up its support to Africa, which was exploited by the West for several centuries. Non-governmental organizations have become a hope for Africa. The IHH has brought up the poverty issue in African countries to the agenda of Turkey and has launched a new campaign for the needy in these countries. Preparations continue to perform 100,000 cataract operations in 10 African countries. YTL 100 ENOUGH TO BRING AFRICANS TO THE LIGHT The campaign initiated with the slogan “If You Help They will See” is drawing huge support. In Turkey, a cataract operation costs between 500 and 1,000 new Turkish liras (YTL), while it costs only YTL 100 in African countries, because doctors volunteer to contribute to the campaign and cost of an operation is low. Only YTL 100 will suffice to bring the cataract-victim African people to the light. HEALTH MINISTRY SUPPORTS CAMPAIGN Cataract operations campaign is co-organized by the IHH and the Solidarity Foundation. The campaign, which is supported by the Turkish Health Ministry, has drawn huge interest so far. Philanthropic people who are aware of the suffering of cataract victims mobilized when the campaign was launched. People found it very pleasing that such a small amount, YTL 100, will suffice to bring a person to the light. Soon after the campaign was initiated, IHH officials went to the region to carry out necessary works. An executive office was opened in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum and preparations for an eye center started. A protocol was signed with the Sudanese Health Ministry and IHH team was allocated a land to build an eye center on. It was reported that the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency and Turkish Embassy in Sudan also supported IHH activities in the region. As required proceedings and research were conducted for the establishment of an eye center, data of people who would be operated on in other countries was collected. It was stated that if preparations are completed, cataract operations would commence in the coming weeks. |
